Fort Lewis College spokesman Mitch Davis said Wednesday a reopen date has not been set for the pool. The college is awaiting estimates on what can be fixed, what needs replacing and how long repairs will take.
Davis said the college does not have a damage estimate, and school officials are waiting for more information from contractors and insurance agents.
In the meantime, the facility’s frequenters, including the Durango High School teams, are making do without the college pool.
Kimberly Ebner, aquatics supervisor for Durango Parks and Recreation, said the Durango Community Recreation Center has hosted Durango High School boys and girls swim teams, dive team, diving club, kayak class and the college’s adaptive aquatics program for kids with disabilities.
Ebner said the rec center will host the groups as long as necessary, and the extra swimmers haven’t adversely impacted the pool’s usual functions and users.
“We’ve just gotten really good with scheduling,” Ebner said. “And we’ve done it before. When the Aquatics Center did repairs, we hosted all the same groups.”
The sprinkler line broke Feb. 7 when anchors securing the pipe gave way, flooding the pool area and mechanical equipment beneath it.
