Fort Lewis College hosted more than 1,600 students this summer for its annual series of camps.
Eight athletic programs – including athletic training – put on 18 camps throughout the summer.
Campers ranged in age from 5 through high school.
New FLC head men’s basketball coach Bob Pietrack has directed the men’s basketball camp since 2004.
More than 350 campers attended the Skyhawks’ individual and team basketball camps.
“Fort Lewis College and Durango is a wonderful place to spend time in during the summer and it is reflective in the growth of our camp,” he said in a news release. “We have a number of local based players on our current roster that have grown up coming to our basketball camp. We feel like the camp is an incredible showpiece for not only our basketball program but for Fort Lewis College.”
The volleyball team camp has seen its numbers rise from 16 teams in 2013 to 35 teams this past summer.
Its individual camp numbers also went up 40 percent from 2014.
“I believe the dramatic increase in Skills Campers and Team Camp participants was a direct result of persistent contact with high school coaches in the Southwest,” said FLC volleyball head coach Kelley Rifilato in a news release. “We targeted all high schools in southwest Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. We believe this will assist Skyhawk volleyball recruiting in the future for years to come.”
