The Fort Lewis College softball team got thrown right into the fire over the weekend to start its season.
The Skyhawks played five games in two days at the West Texas A&M Invitational in Canyon, Texas, and came away with one win and four losses.
The lone win came in the third game of a long day on Friday against Missouri Southern State University as the Skyhawks won 8-4. The win came after a 6-0 season-opening loss to No. 4 West Texas A&M and a 14-12 loss to Fort Hays after a late FLC lead evaporated.
On Saturday, Fort Lewis began the day with an 11-3 loss to Cameron University and followed up with a 8-6 defeat at the hands of Washburn University.
“This is a tough way to start the season, but we will take what we need to work on a continue to improve,” Fort Lewis head coach Elle Fracker said in a news release. “We saw a lot of good things that we have to go off of as well.”
Though it might not have been the result Fracker wanted in the win-loss column, Angelique Elemen and Gianna Melaragno put up some numbers over the weekend that any coach would be proud of. Melaragno was 8-for-16 at the plate and scored 10 runs in the five games. Elemen was more often than not the one to plate Melaragno and racked up 10 runs batted in, two doubles and a home run in the team’s first two days of action.
Senior shortstop Adriana Rosthenhausler was also a bright spot for the FLC offense with a 5-for-11 effort over the weekend with six runs scored.
Fort Lewis will be back in action Friday to begin another busy weekend at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
