Fort Lewis College films win gold medals

The college recently won gold Collegiate Advertising Awards for two videos. One focused on the new building and the other focused on research inspired by the Gold King Mine spill of August 2015.

Fort Lewis College is selling its science programs with finesse, bringing home two gold awards in the 2015 Collegiate Advertising Awards.

The college’s Marketing and Communications Department won gold Tuesday in two special video production categories. The short piece focused on new Geosciences, Physics and Engineering Building, and a longer mini-documentary highlighted the college’s efforts to use the Gold King Mine spill in August 2015 as a teaching tool.

College staff started filming the spill right away and some of the mining-centric projects started in fall, while others that were ongoing took on new significance, said Shan Wells, the videographer and communications specialist.

“We all felt that it was really important that the school act ... and actually act in the community interest,” he said.

The college is involved in long-term monitoring of river health, understanding how heavy metals effect the environment and mapping mine tunnels near the Gold King Mine and natural geology in the area.

The college likely will continue to document its research around Animas River health and other projects that were inspired by the mine spill, said Mark Jastorff, the college’s vice president for advancement.
