One of Fort Lewis College football’s best chances of getting an Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win was against Adams State on Saturday and the Skyhawks took advantage.
The Skyhawks cruised to a 44-24 victory over the Grizzlies at home behind a season-high 316 rushing yards. The 44 points were the most FLC has scored in a RMAC game this season. FLC’s win kept the Class for Pass! trophy in Durango.
“We finally put three phases together for the most part,” FLC head coach Johnny Cox said. “Adam State came out and was very physical. They scored first and I thought, ‘Oh man, these guys aren't going to lay down. They want the trophy.’ So, we had to respond, and that's where our family attitude shows up, as far as not panicking and being able to play a really good game, a really good family team win.”
FLC improved to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the RMAC, while Adams State dropped to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the RMAC.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jacob Morris led the Skyhawks passing attack and finished 12/18 passing for 242 yards. Redshirt junior KB Broadus led the Skyhawks on the ground with 12 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Zachary Gaumont led FLC with two catches for 85 yards.
“That's a testimony to how much perseverance he's been through,” Cox said about Braodus. “This is actually his fourth year of college. Unfortunately, he’s missed three seasons (due to injury) to finally get here. I'm glad that he didn't quit. I'm sure he's glad he didn't quit because this is something that he wanted, but it wasn't a direct route for him.”
FLC’s 316 yards rushing were the most since Nov. 5, 2016. Cox knew going into the game that the Skyhawks could run the football after scouting the Grizzlies’ defense. Cox was also feeling good about FLC’s offensive line.
Adams State scored first, but FLC still led 13-10 after the first quarter and then 23-10 at halftime. The Skyhawks kept their foot on the gas with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter for a 44-10 lead.
FLC hits the road to play at New Mexico Highlands next Saturday at 1 p.m.
