The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team is going through a complete coaching overhaul this offseason, and another new face was announced Thursday.
New Skyhawks head coach David Oberholtzer chose Colorado native and former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player Tyler Amerman to be his assistant coach. Prior to joining the Skyhawks, Amerman was on the coaching staff at University of Charleston, a program that has been to the NCAA Division II Final Four the last two seasons.
“Tyler brings a lot of strong qualities that will help continue to advance our program,” Oberholtzer said in a news release. “He’s fresh off a Division II Final Four appearance and has a good understanding of the commitment needed to be successful. He has strong ties to Colorado, which will be a great asset in terms of recruiting, and as a former player in the RMAC, he’s very familiar with the conference.”
Amerman played for the nationally ranked 2007-2009 Colorado Mesa men’s soccer teams as a defender and midfielder. After college, he worked for the Colorado Rapids, West Virginia Futbol and Colorado Rush before heading to Charleston.
“I’m truly honored and humbled by the opportunity given to me by Coach Oberholtzer and Fort Lewis College,” Amerman said in the news release. “It’s a dream come true to be able to be a part of a program with such a long lasting tradition of integrity and success.”
Fort Lewis finished last season 12-6-2 after losing to Colorado Mines in the second round of the RMAC Tournament.
After the season, longtime head coach Oige Kennedy left FLC to take a coveted position as an assistant for the reigning Division I National Champion Stanford University men’s soccer team.
The Skyhawks’ annual alumni game is scheduled for August 27. Fort Lewis will host Midwestern State in the season-opener at 3 p.m. September 2.
