Peter Byrne kept the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team alive in the first half, and Raul Pescador sent the team to a win in the second
Byrne made nine saves and Pescador scored in the 53rd minute to send the Skyhawks to a 1-0 home win against Regis on Friday at Dirks Field in Durango.
Pescador scored his second goal of the season to deliver the game-winner for FLC. Max Fuentes delivered a touch pass to Pescador, who ripped a shot from 8 yards out to beat Regis goalkeeper Chase Webert.
FLC (7-4-4, 5-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outshot the Rangers 14-9, but Regis (6-7, 4-7 RMAC) had more accuracy with nine shots on goal to FLC’s six. FLC also was whistled for 14 fouls in the match to only five from Regis.
Byrne, who has won three RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week awards this year, was under pressure early and made six saves in the first half. Byrne and the FLC defense also held off seven Regis corner kicks.
The win moved FLC back into second place in the RMAC behind No. 15 Colorado Mines (12-3, 10-1 RMAC). The Orediggers will visit Dirks Field in a huge game at 1 p.m. Sunday. FLC fell to Colorado Mines 1-0 in Golden last Sunday.
There are only three games left in the regular season, and FLC will being play in the RMAC Tournament on Nov. 1.
