Fort Lewis College speaker wins governor’s race

Eric Greitens, author of The Heart and the Fist, visits Fort Lewis College in 2012 when his book was selected for the Common Reading Experience. Pictured in front of Strength & Compassion: Photographs on display at the same time, Greitens was elected governor of Missouri on Tuesday in his first political race.

Four years ago, author Eric Greitens, 42, was in Durango to speak at Fort Lewis College after his book

Running as a Republican and winning with 53 percent of the vote, the humanitarian and former Rhodes Scholar and Navy SEAL was a political novice running against a longtime politician.

In Greitens’ book, the Bronze Star honoree discusses his post-military career as the founder of The Mission Continues, an organization that offers fellowships to post-Sept. 11 military veterans. The fellowships allow veterans to find ways to serve their communities and transform their lives in the process.

“A good life,” Greitens wrote in the book, “a meaningful life, a life in which we can enjoy the world and live with purpose, can only be built if we do more than live for ourselves.”
