Fort Lewis College students get a check-up

Fresh Check Day targets students’ mental wellness
Fort Lewis College students showed up Wednesday to be “checked on” during the school’s first Fresh Check Day. The event intended to promote mental health and suicide prevention. It included different health booths, like this one that screened students for skin cancer. Fresh Check Day is a national event held in 14 states.

Fort Lewis College held its first Fresh Check Day on Wednesday to check-in with students about their wellness.

More than 200 students attended the fair, said Kendra Gallegos Reichle, adviser with the Wellness Peer Advisory Council at FLC.

The event was held to promote mental health wellness and suicide prevention. Students had access to interactive expo booths, peer-to-peer messaging, and support and information from a variety of campus departments and groups.

“At Fort Lewis College, we want to help students manage anxiety and give them the confidence to engage in dialogue about mental health. Fresh Check Day focuses on peer-to-peer mentoring and gives our students the skills needed to support each other in times of need,” said Jeff Dupont, senior director of Student Wellness.

Fresh Check Day is a program created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, a national nonprofit that works to prevent suicide, help students feel hopeful and be mentally healthy.
