Up against a formidable opponents ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks lost their home opener Saturday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango.
No. 13 Regis picked up a 21-5 win Saturday against FLC. Regis improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with the win. FLC dropped to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the RMAC. It was the Rangers’ second lopsided win against FLC this season, as FLC lost 24-6 on March 3 in Denver.
FLC got out to a 1-0 lead on an unassisted Taylor Cabrera goal with 27 minutes, 52 seconds to play in the first half. But the Rangers got back-to-back goals from Rachael Walker to start an eight-goal run that led to a 8-1 lead with 16:30 to go in the half. FLC’s Kelli Warmouth got a goal with 15:52 to go in the first half to end the run, but Regis then got another goal from Walker to start another 8-0 run before halftime that stretched to 9-0 after the break. FLC trailed 16-2 at halftime.
Warmouth led FLC with two goals. Brooke Galle had one and so did Abby Escandon to go with Cabrera’s one goal. Wendy Donier and Sarah Myres led Regis with five goals each, while Walker finished with four. Jada Bonner also had three goals.
Regis outshot FLC 30-14 in the contest and was deadly accurate with 25 shots on goal. FLC had 11 shots on frame.
FLC turned the ball over 14 times to nine by the Rangers, who scooped up 13 groundballs as a team to only six for FLC. Regis also won 16-of-26 draw controls.
Daris Wienk played all 60 minutes in goal for FLC. She made four saves. Elle Crawford was the ginning goalkeeper for Regis. She allowed two goals and made four saves. Hope Correia allowed three goals and made two saves in the second half in net for Regis.
Saturday’s game was the first of a four-game homestand for the Skyhawks, who will host Adams State at 3 p.m. April 6.
FLC is now fifth in the conference standings. Lindenwood (10-0, 5-0 RMAC) is in first, and Regis is second.
