Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse falls to Colorado Mesa 8-6

Historic first win for Colorado Mesa

A slow start for Fort Lewis College in Saturday’s women’s lacrosse match led to a historic first for FLC’s program – and it is one the Skyhawks would like to forget.

For the first time in history, Colorado Mesa University’s women got the better of Fort Lewis on the lacrosse field as the Mavericks used a sluggish FLC start to build a big first half lead en route to the landmark 8-6 win.

Colorado Mesa’s Lydia Furrow led all scorers with four goals. Brooke Galle, Ryann Pierce and Rebecca Miller each scored twice for Fort Lewis.

Furrow had a hat trick before the Skyhawks (5-4, 2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) could score twice. Her third goal came just before halftime as the Mavericks scored five of the first six goals. Pierce had Fort Lewis’ only two goals of the half and any comeback effort in the second half would be an uphill climb.

The Skyhawks made the push and began the second half with three goals in the first ten minutes to tie the game 5-5. Furrow struck again, however, to give Colorado Mesa (6-2, 2-1 RMAC) the lead for good.

The Mavericks went up 8-5 with 10 minutes left to play and the only response the Skyhawks could muster up offensively was a late goal by Miller.

Alyssa Spencer did her best in the net for Fort Lewis stopping 10 Mavericks’ shots.

FLC will try to get back in the win column at 1 p.m. Sunday as the Skyhawks are scheduled to host Westminster College.
