Fort Lewis College women’s soccer piles up goals at Adams State

Four different Skyhawks score in 4-1 win

A four-goal game Saturday gave the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team its first win of the spring season after a pair of draws in the previous two matches.

FLC (1-0-2) scored two goals in each half of a 4-1 win at Adams State (1-1-0) in Alamosa.

“This was another game, in a sense, where we needed a result to keep feeling like we’re taking steps forward, and it was fun to see us play with a lead,” FLC head coach Damian Clarke said in a news release.

Aubrey Swindle got the action going in the 20th minute with her second goal of the season. It came off an assist from Elizabeth David on a set-piece play.

Corinne Sanderson scored again for FLC only three minutes later, as she completed a great run to end up on the end of a pass from Charlie Kaiser.

The Skyhawks would make it a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute when Madyson Barela tallied a goal.

FLC would concede a penalty kick to Adams State in the 71st minute, and Jayne Scheiss would score on the opportunity.

But Julia Johnson added her second goal of the season for FLC in the 83rd minute to solidify the lopsided win for the Skyhawks.

“The quality of goals we’ve been scoring have been tremendous,” Clarke said. “I haven’t had a team this capable of scoring a lot of goals in a long time.”

FLC outshot the Grizzles 20-5, including 9-2 in shots on goal. The Skyhawks never gave up a corner-kick opportunity to the Grizzlies and tallied seven of their own.

Katie Dunbabin made one save in goal for FLC. The goal allowed came with Riley Bravin in net. Ashley Beers made five saves for Adams State and allowed three goals.

FLC will host Colorado Mesa University at 3 p.m. Friday. The teams tied 1-1 on March 7 in Grand Junction.
