Fort Lewis cross country second to Adams State

Adams State dominates

Fort Lewis men and women both took second place Saturday at the Joe Vigil Open at Adams State University in Alamosa.

Both Skyhawks teams finished well behind dominant Adams State programs. The Grizzlies men placed the top ten runners en route to a landslide win over Fort Lewis, Trinidad State Junior College and Johnson & Wales.

FLC’s Garrett Sapakoff came in 11th in the 8k run in 25 minutes, 57 seconds. Hosava Kretzmann was right behind in 12th just three-tenths of a second back.

Caleb Allen (27:02) was 18th for Fort Lewis, Sylas Schutt (27:30) came in 23rd, William Scroggins (28:07) was 26th, Andrew Rome’s 28:21 was 28th and Brandon Sheard (28:42) was 30th.

It was a similar story on the women’s wide as Adams State steamrolled the same four-team field with the top six finishers and 10 of the best 11.

The FLC women were led by Rebecca Bramley’s 18:27 5k run that was good for seventh. Emily White came in 12th with a time of 18:48 and Erin Renner was 16th in 19:12. Madison Obernesser (19:35) came in 18th, Emily Bryant (19:44) was 20th, Carly Wilborn (20:04) was 21st and Shayla Tate (20:20) came in 23rd.

VolleyballIt’s been a tough Midwestern State Invitation Tournament for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team, and Saturday was no different.

The Skyhawks had an early 9 a.m. match Saturday against Southern Nazarene. Matisse Monty led FLC with 11 kills while Kendra Swackenberg led the team with 27 assists and 11 digs, but Fort Lewis was swept 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 26-24).

FLC closed out the weekend dropping a match to Emporia State 3-2. Hannah Martinez led the Skyhawks with 14 kills and Swackenberg led all players with 43 assists.

Fort Lewis won the first set 25-14 and the third 25-19 before dropping the fifth set tiebreaker 15-11.

The Skyhawks open league play with a 7 p.m. match Friday at South Dakota Mines.
