Fort Lewis cycling names national team

Team aiming for title May 6-8 in Georgia

The Fort Lewis College Cycling Team finished its Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference road racing season at the conference championships in Pueblo, where it secured the RMCCC Road Conference title after strong results all season.

The Pueblo Classic was also the final race FLC used to determine its team for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals on May 6-8 in Augusta, Georgia.

“Our spring road season is completed, and we are excited to head to Augusta to compete against the best in the country,” said FLC Cycling Director Dave Hagen. “We have had some great performances this season across all categories with more than a handful competing in road racing for the first time ever. Our varsity racers have been working hard to prepare themselves physically, mentally and tactically for nationals and feel we can bring some titles home to FLC!”

FLC cycling staff reviewed season results and the large pool of student athletes to choose who will represent FLC at nationals. Ava Hachmann, Michaela Thompson and Natalie Quinn have been winning races, and Hachmann won the criterium in Pueblo and finished third in the road race.

The men’s team has been nailing down its teamwork and tactics and hopes for standout performances from Sam Brown, Guy Leshem and Ian Williams. Brown was the runner-up in Pueblo’s criterium race.

“Picking a nationals team out of so many deserving riders is one of the toughest parts of the job, but I think we did a great job of picking riders best suited to the courses and conditions while also working well as a team,” Hagen said. “Things have been coming together for the team this spring and if the breaks go our way, we have a good shot at the team title. Looking at the start list for the races, it is like an under-23 national championship with many of the top developing riders from around the country competing. We also have strong supporting cast that will help keep our strongest racers near the front for the road race and some criterium specialists that will perform well.”

The following student athletes will compete in the team time trial May 6, road race May 7 and criterium May 8 at Fort Gordon and downtown Augusta.
