Newly-minted head coach Ed Rifilato and the Fort Lewis College football team made a few moves Tuesday morning to solidify the coaching staff.
Jordan Fenner was hired as the team’s new quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. The Skyhawks also promoted Joe Morris from assistant head coach to defensive coordinator, and Clayton Johnson was moved from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator.
Fenner spent last year as the tight ends coach, assistant special teams coordinator and operations and travel coordinator at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
“I am very excited to join the Fort Lewis family and to join the rich history that the athletic department has built,” Fenner said in a news release. “Coach Rifilato is a proven winner, but more than that, he cares about the people who work for him and the players in the program. I’m grateful for the hard work of the coaches that came before me, and I’m looking forward to build on the foundation that has already been laid.”
While at South Dakota Mines, Fenner helped the Hardrockers become one of the top offensive teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Fenner’s most recent Colorado ties came as the quarterbacks and wide receivers offensive consultant and passing game coordinator at Greeley West High School between 2012-14. During those years, the Spartans ranked in the top 10 in Class 5A and qualified for the postseason.
Before Greeley West, Fenner was the passing game coordinator, wide receivers and assistant special teams coordinator at the University of Northern Colorado from 2007-11.
Fenner got his start in coaching at East Central University as an assistant coach from 2004-05. He was an offensive assistant football coach and special teams coordinator at Southern Oregon University from 2006-07.
Rifilato took over in place of John L. Smith head coach immediately after Smith announced his resignation in November. Smith spent three seasons coaching FLC, and the Skyhawks finished with their first winning record since 2007 during last year’s 7-4 campaign. FLC will open the 2016 season at Sept. 3 at Chadron State.
