Fort Lewis football stars claim two RMAC awards

Griffin runs, Hatton returns recognized

The Skyhawks made it three in a row. Three wins, and three consecutive weeks with a player honored with conference award.

After blowing out winless New Mexico Highlands 52-7, two Fort Lewis College football players were recognized by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mason Hatton was selected the Special Teams Player of the Week, backing up two consecutive awards to kicker/punter Joseph Cavale.

Drake Griffin rushed into the FLC record books for the most single-season rushing yards in program history thanks to a 192-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Cowboys. Griffin did all of that on only 13 carries. He still has one more week to add to an already impressive total of 1,236 yards that surpassed the previous total of 1,206 yards set by Scott Stamper in 1982.

Griffin is also only two touchdowns away from matching the single-season rushing TD record at Fort Lewis with an opportunity to match or surpass that total in the season finale this week at Dixie State in Utah. He has rushed for seven touchdowns the last two weeks alone and has averaged 6.68 yards-per-carry this season.

Hatton’s punt return TD went for 78 yards in the second quarter last week. He also had a return of 45 yards in the third quarter to finish with 123 yards on three punt returns in the game. He also had a kickoff return of 11 yards.

FLC players have now won four player of the week awards. The three-game winning streak has the team at 4-6 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC following a 7-4 season last year.
