Fort Lewis golf secures second

Golf team steady in spring debut

It was a strong start to the spring season for the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team.

After three rounds in North Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Minot State-MSU Billings Beaver-Jacket Invitational at Aliante Golf Club.

Playing on the par-72 course, the Skyhawks scored a three-round total of 893 to finish two strokes behind tournament winner Westminster College.

“The men’s team was grinding from the beginning and had put up three consistent rounds on the board,” FLC head coach Guy Begay said in a news release. “Westminster played well today and they earned the two-shot win. Freshman Tyler Blohm played well and is getting better all spring. As a team, we’re another step closer to our objectives.”

Nine teams and 56 players competed in the tournament. Tyler Hand of Westminster finished 2-under-par to take the individual win.

Blohm tied for third at 4-over. Mitchell Donley also finished in the top 10 tied for 10th at 7-over. Matt Huntley was solo in 15th at 9-over, and Hugh Taylor was close behind in 16th and 10-ver. Michael Thomas rounded out the Skyhawks at 15-over, which put him in a tie for 14th.

FLC will look to build on the impressive start next weekend at the Cal Baptist Invitational.

The FLC women’s team finished fifth out of six teams. Summer Vigil finished third in the two-round event at 12-over 156. Isabella Martinez tied for 13th at 27-over. Lindsey Blythe came in 20th at 39-over, and Judith Camacho was 21st at 40-over. Sheby Hindes tied for 22nd at 42-over for FLC.

“Summer (Vigil) played well and had an opportunity to win the event as an individual,” Guy Begay said. “But a couple bad breaks put a dent in her momentum in the final round. She’s only getting better and soon she’ll be experienced enough to close out the wins.”

MSU Billings won the tournament, while Eryn Ellis of Rocky Mountain College was the top individual at 10-over-par.

FLC has a long break before its next women’s tournament April 17-18 at the Colorado Mesa Spring Invitational in Grand Junction.
