Fort Lewis lacrosse falls to Mesa

Team looks ahead to first home game of season Sunday

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team wrapped up its weekend away with a 15-4 loss to Colorado Mesa University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Sunday.

The Mavericks dominated the Skyhawks in shots 34-11 and shots on goal 24-8 while holding the Skyhawks scoreless in two quarters of play.

Sophomore Haley Dostie led FLC with two goals, and sophomore Caprietta Abbadessa and freshman Mikki Brown each scored one. Junior Liv Crawford dished out two assists, and redshirt sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa caused four turnovers and four ground balls. Junior goalie Averi Basso had nine saves.

Fort Lewis found its first off an Abbadessa shot, cutting the Mavericks lead to 2-1 with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter. Crawford assisted her second goal of the quarter one minute later, finding Dostie for the equalizer. CMU responded with two goals before Dostie rifled another shot past the keeper for a 4-3 score after one period of play.

Mesa, however, won the second quarter 3-0. Brown’s third-quarter goal cut the lead to 8-4, but Mesa scored the final seven goals.

Fort Lewis (1-1, 1-1 RMAC) will play its first home game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Ray Denison Memorial Field when the team hosts McKendree University for a nonconference matchup.

“We are super-excited to play at home after a hard road swing weekend,” said head coach Ashley Travis. “It will be fun and exciting to play in front of our home crowd. It's going to be fun to play a nonconference opponent for the first time in two years this upcoming Sunday.”
