A pair of first-inning home runs set the Skyhawks up for a big win.
The Fort Lewis College softball team finished a weekend in Las Vegas with an 8-4 victory Sunday against Notre Dame de Namur. The Skyhawks went 3-2 in their season-opening, five-game series at Montana State-Billings’ Desert Stinger in Nevada.
“After five games, you are going to have some things you did well and some things you want to focus on,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said.
Zeiter’s team got out to a quick start Sunday morning against Notre Dame de Namur (4-3). Chelsea Rodriguez and Destinee DeHerrera hit back-to-back home runs to give FLC a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Rodriguez hit a three-run homer before DeHerrera’s blast.
Rodriguez, who hit her second home run of the season Sunday, finished the game 1-for-1 at the plate with three runs batted in and three walks. DeHerrera went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and her first homer of the year.
“It was nice to come out with the bats in the first inning and jump on top,” Zeiter said. “Softball is a big game of momentum. With those two home runs, you could feel the intensity in our dugout just rise. Hitting can be contagious.”
The Skyhawks scored three more runs in the second inning.
FLC stole three bases in the game and took extra bases on several overthrows by the Argonauts.
“A big plan this year is making sure we keep putting pressure on opposing teams to be sharp,” Zeiter said.
FLC beat Texas-Permian Basin 5-3 on Friday and Simon Fraser 9-1 in five innings Saturday.
FLC lost 11-3 to Texas Woman’s on Friday and 14-6 in six innings to Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday.
