Fort Lewis softball runs into aces at Chadron State

Eagles sweep doubleheader

Fort Lewis College’s softball team ran into a couple of buzzsaws in Saturday’s doubleheader at Chadron State.

The Eagles (20-14-1, 14-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) sent out two of the RMAC’s top 10 in earned-run average to the circle to face the Skyhawks. Chadron State used a four-run second inning to grab the lead, and that was all the Eagles needed in the first game with Tayler Hall in the circle. The hosts won 4-2 and rode the momentum all the way through Game 2, which Chadron State won 10-2 in six innings.

Hall pushed her record to 10-2 with the win and battled through four errors made by a sloppy defense behind her to come away on top. She allowed only two hits, struck out four and didn’t allow an earned run to cross the plate.

Angelique Elemen and Tehenia Telliano had the only hits in the first game for Fort Lewis.

Victoria Johnson took the loss for the Skyhawks (10-25, 7-15 RMAC) and threw a nice game aside from the tough second inning. The senior threw six innings, gave up five hits and four runs, all of which were earned.

Elemen started Game 2 with a bang. Her two-run first inning blast gave the Skyhawks an early lead. The home run was the freshman’s team-leading ninth of the season. That total is also good for second-most in the conference this season.

That was all the damage FLC could do off the Eagles’ other ace Cierra Cosslett.

Chadron State came right back and scored two in the bottom half of the first inning off Skyhawks’ starter Olivia Goldberg. The Eagles scored in each of the six innings, and they took advantage of four FLC errors to keep rallies going.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, Elemen’s first-inning blast was the only run producer of the game for FLC. Lauren Caldwell had two hits, and Denae Fisher was 1-for-2 with a walk for the Skyhawks in the loss.

Chadron State will host Fort Lewis in another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.
