The opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play was a rough one for the Fort Lewis College softball team.
The Skyhawks finished the weekend on the wrong side of a four-game sweep in Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders against Colorado Mesa. After losing two on Saturday, the Skyhawks were run ruled twice on Sunday, losing 14-5 and 21-11.
FLC (3-13, 0-4 RMAC) was slow out of the gates in game one Sunday as Colorado Mesa ran up the score early and often with 13 runs in the first four innings.
By the time Fort Lewis woke up, it was far too late.
Freshman catcher Algelique Elemen was a bright spot again for the Skyhawks going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Rachel Foos took the loss in game one and will hope to turn things around in her next start after starting the season with four consecutive losses.
The Fort Lewis offense came alive in game two as Elemen and Denae Fisher launched home runs in a four-run first inning for FLC.
However, the offense for Colorado Mesa (5-4, 4-0 RMAC) was firing on all cylinders and put up 15 runs in the first three innings off Skyhawks pitcher Victoria Johnson.
Elemen finished game two 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Fisher was 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Robyn Young also contributed offensively with a long ball in the fourth inning and three RBIs in the game two loss.
Fort Lewis will play two again on Monday starting at 10 a.m. against Dixie State (8-4). The games have been moved to Aztec Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M. because of unplayable conditions at FLC’s Aspen Field.
