The Durango High School girls basketball team committed 30 turnovers Thursday against Cedaredge to start the Centauri Mountain Top Classic. The Bruins capitalized on the miscues and went on to win the game, 34-26.
“We turned the ball over a lot,” said DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick. “Their full-court press rushed us.”
Durango led 8-7 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, however, DHS had a couple of starters in foul trouble and Cedaredge took a 19-11 lead into halftime.
“I had to sit some kids in the second quarter, but lots of kids got some experience, which is good; you want to do that in the early season,” Fitzpatrick said.
Mason Rowland scored 14 points to lead the Demons. Sydney Flores added six, and Annie Ginna and Riley Campbell both scored three.
“Cedaredge is good. They went 14-2 last year,” the coach said. “They outworked us.”
Durango fell to 0-2 with the loss, but will return to the court at 8:30 a.m. Friday against the loser of Centauri and Rocky Ford.
“It’s another opportunity for them to get some experience, and hopefully they know the things they need to do, or not do,” Fitzpatrick said. “We need game experience, and we definitely got some (Thursday), especially early with Mason and Sydney in foul trouble. That’s invaluable early in the season.”
Ignacio’s boys and girls teams also are competing in Centauri’s tournament, but results weren’t available at press time.
