Four Demon basketball players honored by SWL

Four Durango High School basketball players were honored recently by the Southwestern League for their performance this season.

Junior Mason Rowland and senior Sydney Flores were selected from the girls team, and seniors Anthony Flint and Walter Stauffer were selected from the boys team.

Rowland, Flint and Stauffer earned all-conference first-team honors, and Flores scored second-team honors.

Rowland and Flores helped the Durango girls reach the Sweet 16 round of the Class 4A state tournament after playoff victories against Regis Groff and Littleton. The team finished 17-8 overall.

Rowland was one of the state’s top scorers, averaging 20.3 points per game and finishing with 507 on the year. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 assists per game and shot 81% from the free throw line and 41% from the field.

Flores was Durango’s No. 2 scorer, with 7.1 points per game. She also pulled down a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game.

Flint and Stauffer helped the Durango boys basketball team earn the right to host a playoff game for the first time since 2016. DHS beat Glenwood Springs in the first round and lost to Montrose in the second round. The boys finished 12-13 overall.

They led Durango in nearly every statistical category.

Flint averaged 14.2 points, 3.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 79% from the free-throw line.

Stauffer averaged 9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, blocked 15 shots and shot 54% from the field.
