Four fire-mitigation projects funded in La Plata County

Four La Plata County neighborhoods are among 150 communities selected by the National Fire Protection Association to receive $500 project-funding awards provided by State Farm.

The communities will implement fuels-reduction projects and wildfire-mitigation education activities on National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, May 6. Colorado communities received 23 of the 150 awards.

Projects in La Plata County include:

Vista de Oro: Residents, Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District and La Plata County Sheriff’s Office will complete the second phase of a project started in 2016 to remove dead trees along County Road 117. Falls Creek Ranch: 500 yard-waste bags will be purchased for people to fill with pine needles, pine cones and dry leaves. The bags will be placed in an air-curtain burner or added to a compost pile on May 6.Aspen Trails: An all-day wildfire-mitigation fair with specialists from Colorado State Forest Service, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District and FireWise will instruct residents about equipment use, forest health and evacuations.Upper Pine Fire Protection District: Specialists will assist with safe-pile burning and chipping demonstration at the Aspen Trails wildfire-mitigation fair.For more information, visit www.nfpa.org.
