Four States Agricultural Exposition hosts ranch rodeo

The Rockin' S Cattle Company wins inaugural event

The Four States Agricultural Exposition hosted its first ever ranch rodeo on Saturday at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds.

Formed in 1981, the non-profit group has hosted the Ag Expo in March for the last 34 years, and it recently decided to add another event and settled on a ranch rodeo.

Sanctioned by the Mountain States Ranch Rodeo with Big Meadows Ranch as the stock contractor, and sponsored by Stotz Equipment and Keesee Motor Company, the event drew six different teams.

The Rockin' S Cattle Company from Saguache, La Plata Boys from Red Mesa/Bayfield, Alpine Ranch of Montrose, Rogers Ranch from Cortez, Tumbling T's Ranch of Mancos and the Wild Bunch from Blanding, Utah all tested their skills in calf branding, a pen and doctor event, trailer loading, wild cow milking and team sorting.

Kent Wollert, Seb Wollert, Travis Rowley and Wade Rowley from Alpine Ranch won the calf branding competition in 36.13 to begin the evening, and they followed it up with a win in the pen and doctor event in 2:12.18.

The Rockin' S Cattle Co., consisting of Josh Staudt, Jase Staudt, Klayt Staudt, Tate Scanga and Kelly Scanga, was the only other team to complete the pen and doctor challenge, and it later won the trailer loading in 1:00.3.

Clayton Wilson, Dason Kremer, Rusty Herrera and Joaquin Huntington kept the La Plata Boys in the mix with third place finishes in calf branding and trailer loading, and then they won the wild milking event in 47.48.

Finally, Preston Grover, Shawn Ivins, Justin Ivins and Chase Murray of the Wild Bunch won the sorting competition with eight head sorted, while the Rockin' S Cattle Co. and La Plata Boys were the only other scoring teams, both finishing with four.

After steadily completing each event, and winning trailer loading, the Rockin' S Cattle Co. finished as champions.

The La Plata Boys finished in second, Alpine Ranch placed third and Hardy Tozer of Rogers Ranch won the best horse award.

It wouldn't have been a rodeo without mutton busting. And after running two heats between the evening's events, Sophee Heaton came out as the winner and Remington Adams finished second.

Four States Ag Expo executive director Radiance Beals was pleased with the turnout for the group's first rodeo and expects it to become an annual event.

"I think it was a very good success," she said. "I think we hit it off well and I think it's going to be an annual event."
