Bayfield Young American Football League teams are off to a strong start this season, with the fourth grade team now 3-1 after defeating Kirtland 31-14 on Saturday.
The fourth graders have also defeated the Farmington Vikings and Cortez. Their only loss of the seaon has been to Aztec.
"I really attribute it to our offensive line," said Head Coach Justin Ross. "Tristan Vavrina is having a strong season at center." Justin Westbrook at right guard also has been a key player so far this season, he added. Zaden Cundiff scored two touchdowns Saturday against Kirtland, and Tavion Box also has been a contender in the slot position. Caden Ross, the fourth-grade quarterback, also has had a strong presence.
Unfortunately, the fourth graders scored the only victory Saturday for Bayfield. The third grade team lost to the Farmington Furies, 36-6, and fifth grade lost 26-6 to Cortez.
