La Plata County will offer free wood mulch, loaded into trucks and trailers, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday at the Bayfield Convenience Center, 4496 County Road 223, in Bayfield.
People are asked to remain in their vehicles at all times and keep their vehicles in park or otherwise immobile while loading. If the area becomes too muddy, the site will be will shut down for the day. The equipment operator can maneuver around a vehicle when it’s stopped for loading. If people want to cover their mulch loads, there will be space to pull forward and away from other vehicles at the loading area. Do not reverse. There is space around the yard waste area to do a full loop. Feel free to make more than one trip, and dump trucks are welcome.
The Bayfield Convenience Center accepts dry, brown yard waste such as tree trimmings and slash. These materials are periodically mulched and offered to residents free of charge. During normal operations, residents are required to self-load the mulch into their vehicles. However, during this event, La Plata County staff members will be on-site with heavy equipment to load trucks and trailers with wood mulch. The transfer station will be closed during the free mulch-loading.
