Free sandbags being provided by La Plata County

Rain on top of above-average snowpack could cause flooding

Free sandbags are available to pick up or fill at several locations in La Plata County.

Flooding is an imminent danger throughout the county, according to a news release issued Friday by La Plata County government. A forecast calling for heavy rain on top of an above-average snowpack means property and structures may need extra protection.

The National Weather Service was calling for rain and a snow-rain mixture this weekend, and showers could pick up again next week.

Two locations are open immediately for those who want to fill bags they already own: La Plata County Fairgrounds in Durango, located at 2500 Main Ave.; and Bayfield Town Hall at 1199 Bayfield Parkway.

Two locations will provide pre-filled sandbags on March 13: Upper Pine River Fire Department Station 1 in Bayfield, located at 75 Clover Drive; and Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department in Hesperus located at 22868 La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140).
