Free speech doesn’t shield us from consequences

It is appropriate to have career consequences for those celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Those with a moral compass speak loudly and persistently to demand the resignation or firing of Cortez teacher Lindi New (Herald, Sept. 17).

New’s despicable social media reactions reveal a shocking void of basic human decency – in her and in the culture at large. New is free to share her opinion under the First Amendment, as much as the school is free to decide whether a teacher with irredeemable opinions shall represent them as an employee and influence students.

Let us all collectively seize this moment to appeal to our better angels. Let us reflect on how we can repair a broken culture that has made the celebration of a public and political murder of a father with two young children so disgustingly common.
