Free speech means vets’ job well done

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, I would like to share the following observations and comments. While waiting at the corner of Ninth Street and Main Avenue to turn north, I waited for a white Prius to pass on Main before turning and falling in behind. Shortly after, the Prius pulled into a parking spot. As I passed on my motorcycle, I noticed a nice older lady flipping me the proverbial bird.

I could not understand what was up, as I did not recognize her as an ex-wife of mine. Then It dawned on me: I was on one of those noisy motorcycles. Then Tuesday, I read the letter to the editor (Herald, June 2) shaming those of us who ride from Tim Thomas.

I would like to remind these people that there are a number of veterans who ride. I would also like to thank them for exercising those rights that we veterans bestowed on them.

Please keep those birds flying high, as freedom of expression is here for you. I would also like to thank those of you who use freedom of speech and freedom of the press. This reinforces in us the fact that we did indeed accomplish something worthwhile.
