Ignacio residents will be able to update their COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday (Dec. 21), when the Vaccine Mobile Bus makes its way to Ignacio Community Library at 470 Goddard Ave. The bus will be parked out front from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The vaccines are free of charge, and those interested will not need to make an appointment, although appointments are recommended for faster service and can be made on mobilevax.us. Insurance and an ID are not required to get the vaccine.

“Mobile clinics have been great for rural communities because it provides easy and convenient access to this critical resource to prevent both infection and serious cases as COVID-19,” said San Juan Basin Public Health spokeswoman Megan Graham.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is continuing to circulate through the population, along with respiratory syncytial virus and influenza, both of which have higher than usual rates for this time of year. The CDC recommends updating both the COVID-19 and flu vaccines as soon as possible.

“The CDC has pretty clear guidance on this,” Graham said. “Anyone who has completed their primary series, which are the two shots, should receive an omicron dose at this point.”

La Plata County residents who want to get a vaccine from the mobile bus can visit the MobileVax website for more information about the bus’ next stops for the rest of the year and January.

SJBPH also provides guidelines for which age groups are eligible for the vaccines, when they should be administered, and the locations at which residents can get their free COVID-19 vaccinations on its website.
