Freeze warning issued for towns across Southwest Colorado

Weather forecasters say freezing temperatures could arrive early Friday, causing damage to crops and gardens.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction has issued a freeze warning from 3 to 8 a.m. Friday for cities across western Colorado.

Locations under a freeze warning include Rangely, Dinosaur, De Beque, New Castle, Mesa, Parachute, Rifle, Silt, Eagle, Edwards, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Cortez, Dove Creek, Mancos, Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio.

Temperatures are expected to range from 28 to 32 degrees with coldest temperatures occurring around sunrise. Sensitive vegetation and swamp coolers will be affected by sub-freezing temperatures.

These conditions can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

Bryan Peterson, with Bear Smart Durango, said it’s too early to worry about freezes killing bears natural food supply. Freezes in late May, early June are what put bears’ food at risk.
