From a not-over-the-hill-just-yet ‘soldier’

Most of us “old-timers” know that La Plata County is an exceptional place to live, with many residents supporting our community’s nonprofit service organizations.

If citizens in each county across the United States were volunteering and donating locally, the entire U.S. could be an even better place to live, work and play.

With the holidays upon us, the annual IRS tax deadline will be here before you know it. Got extra time or some discretionary income? Why not get involved by joining, volunteering or donating to the La Plata Council on Aging, Inc?

COA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity, and non-seniors are welcome. We offer support and help to all three local senior centers in Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio.

We’re headquartered at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center on Main Avenue, next door to the Durango High School.

COA is run by all-volunteer “foot soldiers” serving our county’s senior citizens and is legitimate in the eyes of the IRS to receive deductible monetary or volunteer contributions.

While at the center, you can pick up a valuable local resource guide, newsletter or even become a 2018 COA member. We’re offering a special holiday membership fee of just $2 if you join before Dec. 8 (and possibly receive a Santa Surprise). Remember, all funds stay local and help our senior citizens.

For more info, check out laplatacoa.com, call us at (970) 551-0582 or visit the Durango center at 2424 N. Main.
