The front hill on East Eight Avenue to Fort Lewis College will be closed through July 31 for road construction.
Drivers should use Goeglein Gulch Road to reach the campus.
The road must be closed to make way for construction equipment needed to stabilize the slope below a hairpin turn and while crews dig up the road for a new culvert, said Kelsey Deckert, project manager for FLC’s Physical Plant Services.
The new culvert above the hairpin turn is intended to divert as much water as possible from the ditch alongside the road, she said. A 24-inch culvert will replace the 18-inch culvert, she said.
The culvert will also be covered by a grate to keep the pipe clear, she said.
The project is expected to cost $130,000 and is the largest road maintenance project for the college this summer, Deckert said.
Road construction started June 26 and was ceased briefly during the Fourth of July holiday.
