Full-strength Ignacio boys basketball blasts Ouray

IHS girls close league play unbeaten

For the first time all season, the Ignacio High School boys basketball team had its full roster available, and the result was a 66-25 victory against Ouray on Saturday afternoon in Ignacio.

“Everybody was out there,” Bobcats head coach Chris Valdez said. “Kai (Roubideaux) is still coming off the (knee) injury, but he got out there for three or four minutes each quarter to get him back in a rhythm a little bit.

“We really played good defense, and our press hurt them a little bit. We got some steals and transition baskets to get us going. Our offense, (Ouray) ran mostly man (defense), so we were able to attack the basket.”

The Bobcats (14-4, 11-1 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) filled up the stat sheet with a balanced effort against the Trojans (9-10, 6-4 SJBL). Johnny Valdez led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Lawrence Valdez scored 13 points while he dished out four assists and snagged four steals.

Sophomore Ocean Hunter added nine points, seven rebounds and had five steals. Cole McCaw scored 10 points, and Roubideaux finished with seven points. Kruz Pardo led the team in assists with seven, and he added four steals. Freshman big man Bryce Finn hauled in eight rebounds.

“That was nice,” coach Valdez said of the balanced attack. “We got a couple guys in foul trouble, so that kind of forced us to get some other kids in, which was nice because we’ve got to get our rotation down and get a rhythm so we can make a run.”

Ignacio will close out the regular season with a game against Utah’s Monticello (12-7) on Tuesday at IHS before jumping into the district tournament Friday in Cortez.
