Jerry McBride/Durango Herald

01-31-18- Durango- "Fit to be Tied" walks the catwalk during the 2018 Snowdown Fashion Do's and Don'ts "A Black Tie Affair" on Wednesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Here are a few fun facts about the first day of Snowdown 2018: “A Black Tie Affair.”

Fashion Do’s & Don’ts

Twenty-two teams made up of more than 60 models participated in this year’s Fashion Do’s & Don’ts, including “Bridezilla,” “James Bond & His Bonded Girls,” “Sonny & Shares” and “2 Girls in the Same Dress.”

Snowdown Bartender’s Contest

Ten people competed in the Snowdown Bartender’s Contest in hopes that their drink would win the title of official Snowdown 2018 Cocktail. The contest resulted in a tie between two teams.

The winning cocktails:

Apple Boozya:

2 ounces Farmers Gin

1 ounce St-Germain

¾ ounce apple shrub

Squeeze of lime

Squeeze of simple syrup

Top with soda water

The 007:

1 ounce black vodka

1½ ounces Irish cream

1 ounce cold espresso

1 ounce coffee liquor

¾ ounce Sambuca

Garnish with cocoa powder

Spellebration

The Spellebration ended in a tie! Animas High School and First National Bank took honors this year after both failed to spell the word “callipygian,” meaning nicely shaped buttocks.

The Durango Herald’s team took second place after being tripped up on the word “guerrilla,” as in: “It was guerrilla warfare out there, and the competition was fierce!”

Scotch Doubles Pool Tournament

Colorado Pongas accommodated the largest pool tournament in its history, with 57 teams of two (that’s 114 players) competing in the double-elimination 8-ball tournament.
