Fundraiser to help former FLC lacrosse coach

For the local lacrosse community, it’s time to help an old friend.

A fundraiser for Zane Bilgrav, a former Fort Lewis College men’s lacrosse coach who is battling cancer, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Zia Taqueria, 3101 Main Ave.

A portion of proceeds from sales during the fundraiser will go to help Bilgrav with medical costs. He is in Denver undergoing treatment for brain cancer.

The fundraiser is being organized by Dan Riecks, the current FLC lacrosse coach. Riecks played under Bilgrav, who coached the FLC team in 2010 and 2011. Riecks played alongside Cullen Bilgrav, Zane’s son.

“When I heard he was hurting, I just really wanted to do anything I could,” Riecks said.

The FLC lacrosse club is honoring Zane Bilgrav this season by adorning their helmets with gray ribbons, the color of brain-cancer awareness. Zane Bilgrav’s youngest son, also Zane Bilgrav, is playing for the FLC team this season.
