The Bayfield High School football team will open play in the 2A Intermountain League on the road.
The Wolverines, fresh off their first ever victory against Durango, will travel to Gunnison to take on the winless Cowboys.
Gunnison has faced a tough schedule so far this season. Two of the four teams the Cowboys have faced – La Junta and Salida – are ranked in the 2A coaches’ poll, but none boast the talented defense of the Wolverines. Bayfield’s defense has stymied every opponent it has faced this season and the Cowboys aren’t likely to change that trend.
According to MaxPreps, the Cowboys (0-4) have averaged a mere 128.1 total yards per game and have only found the end zone four times in their four games.
On the other side, the Wolverines (4-0) have averaged just shy of 40 points per game this season.
The potent offense behind its power running attack of Carl Heide and company, which has averaged 239 yards per game, could see another dominant performance this week.
The Cowboys have allowed more than 250 rushing yards in each of their four games, including a 319-yard clip against La Junta and an absurd 536 rushing yards against Olathe.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gunnison High School.
