The town of Bayfield issued a shelter in place order Friday afternoon after a contractor reportedly hit a natural gas line at the Mustang Crossing development site, according to the town’s Facebook page.

The town alerted residents via Facebook around noon Friday about the incident, in which one person commented on the Facebook page saying that Cherry Street was blocked off and some neighbors in the area were evacuated.

The Durango Herald reached out to the town’s public works department, and Town Clerk Dustin Hayden referred the matter to the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.

Multiple phone calls to Upper Pine fire chief Bruce Evans were not returned Friday afternoon.

Mustang Crossing project developer Jeff Jorgenson told the Herald in late February that infrastructure construction of the housing complex, which will be located near the Mesa Meadows subdivision in east Bayfield, is on track to be done by or before June 1.
