Ballots will be mailed Monday to voters across La Plata County ahead of the Nov. 6 General Election.
Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Parker said she expects turnout to be strong for the midterm election, in part because of the many local ballot issues that will appear on this year’s ballot. She has also had people visiting her office to pick up absentee ballots before leaving town for vacation or for the winter, she said.
“People aren’t waiting for the ballots,” she said.
The city of Durango, town of Bayfield, Pine River Public Library District, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District, Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District and the Ignacio-Allison-Oxford Cemetery District all have ballot issues.
Details about each of the tax questions can be found in a General Election booklet mailed out to La Plata County residents. The booklet is also available online at laplatacountyclerk.org under the Local TABOR Notice link on the Election Information page. Additional hard copies are available at voter service and polling centers.

The election is expected to cost La Plata County about $80,000, mostly for printing, mailing and election judges, who are paid, Parker said.
Voters in Durango may expect their ballots to arrive on Thursday, and voters in Bayfield should expect ballots Saturday. If voters don’t receive a ballot by Oct. 22, they should call the Clerk and Recorder’s Office and request a replacement.
Residents should return their ballots by mail no later than Oct. 29. Otherwise, they should drop them off at one of several locations across the county. The last day to register to vote online is also Oct. 29.
Mail-in ballots in La Plata County require a single stamp.
Residents may register to vote at a voter service and polling center any time leading up to Election Day, including the day itself.

Three voter service and polling centers will be open in La Plata County leading up to general election.
La Plata Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 22 to Oct. 26. It will be open from 8 a.m. until noon Oct. 27 and Nov. 3. The office will open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Oct. 29 until Nov. 2 and on Nov. 5.
Bayfield Town Hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 29 until Nov. 2 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 5.
La Plata County Fairgrounds will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 5.
All polling centers will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Election Day.
