Generate power and jobs locally

This is an exciting year to be a voter in the upcoming LPEA election, as we have the opportunity to elect board members with bold, forward-thinking ideas that will bring tremendous benefits to our community.

We need leadership at LPEA that will prioritize local investment in abundant, low-cost renewable power, which is why I encourage members to vote for Tim Wheeler, Britt Bassett and Jeff Mannix. These candidates recognize that LPEA cannot continue to bury its head in the sand and refuse to examine its current contract. They are committed to exploring alternatives to an outdated and archaic status quo in which we presently send dollars out of our community for expensive coal-generated power.

Present-day economic realities already show that solar power technology is cheaper and far more sustainable than the cost of continuing to burn coal. With 300-plus annual days of sunshine, we have an incredible opportunity to generate our own electric power and provide local jobs.

Ballots will arrive around April 18. I encourage residents of North La Plata County to vote for Tim Wheeler, city residents to vote for Britt Bassett and those residing south and southeast of the city limits to vote for Jeff Mannix.
