The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began drilling at Navajo Dam on Wednesday to conduct geologic assessments on the downstream slopes of the dam. This work will allow Reclamation to characterize foundation materials and allow for long term monitoring of groundwater.
Construction equipment traffic will be visible on or around the dam during drilling. Drilling activities will produce loud noises along with flying dust and possibly water flowing from drill holes. All of these are normal and expected during this type of project. Drilling is expected to be complete in August 2016.
Reclamation is the largest wholesale water supplier and the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the United States, with operations and facilities in the 17 Western States. Its facilities also provide substantial flood control, recreation, and fish and wildlife benefits. More information is at the bureau's website at http://www.usbr.gov.
