Get out there for ‘First Day Hikes’ on Jan. 1

A New Year’s Day hike, sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Navajo State Park Visitor Center.

Looking for something fun and different to do on New Year’s Day?

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is hosting “First Day Hikes” around the state Jan. 1.

In a news release, Parks and Wildlife said that First Day Hikes were created to offer an opportunity to begin the New Year “rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors” at a state park close to home.

“We are excited to host First Day Hikes as part of this national effort to get people outdoors and into state parks,” CPW Director Bob Broscheid said. “First Day Hikes are a great way to cure cabin fever and burn off those extra holiday calories by starting off the New Year with an invigorating walk or hike in one of our beautiful state parks.”

According to the National Association of State Park Directors, nearly 28,000 people hiked 68,811 miles in state parks across the country during the 2014 First Day Hikes.

One of the included First Day Hikes is at Navajo State Park near Arboles.

The hike will go about two miles along the Wind Surf Beach Trail. It is recommended for anyone 6 years old or older and is rated easy-to-moderate, with mostly flat terrain.

Meet at the Visitor Center; the hike will go from 11 a.m. to about 2 p.m.

The hike will follow an old railroad grade, and it will offer good views of Navajo Lake. Visitors may see deer, foxes, rabbits and a variety of birds, including several types of waterfowl.

Binoculars, snacks, warm clothing and water are suggested carry-alongs.
