Giants apologize to Adam Jones over banana incident

Orioles outfielder may have been racially targeted
The San Francisco Giants apologized to Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones after Jones tweeted about a fan throwing a banana in his general direction during Sunday’s game in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants are offering Adam Jones an apology for the idiotic and possibly racially motivated behavior of one of their fans.

The defending World Series champions issued a statement today saying they “would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Adam and the entire Orioles organization” after the Baltimore outfielder tweeted that a fan had thrown a banana at him from behind the center-field bleachers Sunday at AT&T Park.

The Giants said they have reviewed security video but have not been able to identify the person responsible for the act, which can be interpreted as a racial insult.

Jones, who hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning of Sunday’s 10-2 victory over the Giants, sent out an angry tweet after the game that said, “I want to thank whatever (expletive) threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jackass.”

Staci Slaughter, the Giants’ senior vice president of communications, told USA TODAY Sports the club only found out about the incident after Jones sent out his tweet.

“I wish the incident could’ve been reported to us sooner just so we could have tried to address it right away,” Slaughter said. “Our fans are generally very well behaved, but when we catch somebody doing something like that, we have zero tolerance, and we immediately eject them.”
