Although kissing 61, I clearly adore being referred to as a “girl” instead of “ma’am” as the majority of attendants at the “What a Girl Wants Expo” on Nov. 12 at the Durango Fairgrounds would probably agree.
My reservations on the content of the event, which may have been preconceived on what I somehow anticipated at this event – the first ever female-focused “expo” I have ever attended – but later, rings true after reflection and discussion. Is the whiteness of our teeth the numero uno concern of “girls”?
There was fabulous jewelry, fashion, massage, makeup and natural health presentations. Can you perceive a “but” a comin’? You are indeed correct! Where was one booth on women’s (“girls”) health? Where was another booth on women’s (“girls”) health? Where did I pick up a brochure on birth control? Where could I learn about sexually transmitted diseases? How about suicide among “girls”? Sexual abuse? Answer: not at the “What a Girl Wants Expo.”
I am 1,000 percent certain that the booth cost for our local pregnancy center and related clinic services were within budget for table space and brochures for an event as well publicized as this one. I trust that future events of this type include vital information for “girls,” information to both protect and maintain inner health – not just white teeth for others to view at hundreds and hundreds of unattainable dollars.
