Give representation back to the people

I have been fine with sitting on the sidelines during the recall debate. Given the fact that I haven’t seen gross malfeasance or criminal conduct, I had been inclined to not sign the recall petition. Not now.

In the article about commissioners being elected by district, Commissioner Lachelt plays her predictable hand again. The reason she supports the current process is that it clearly gives the Democrats an advantage in influencing the other two district’s outcomes by numbers of votes alone. Her stated reason for not supporting this bill is because she believes that the commissioners would be forever pitted against each other. If all three commissioners agreed on every issue, then the voters did something wrong.

Of course, I want our commissioner here in District 1 to represent our interests and to advocate for issues that I/we feel strongly about.

That’s why I voted for him. I don’t want the District 2 Commissioner telling us out here what is important to us.

She should be representing the interests of those folks that live in her district.

Now, when it comes to debate, we’d like to think that we have elected adults who can discuss the issues and come to an agreement about what is in the best interest of La Plata County and all the citizens who live here. By passing this piece of legislation, we will be giving the voice and representation of the people back to where it belongs.
