Go green, reelect Turner to LPEA board

This year’s election for the La Plata Electric Association board of directors is a pivotal moment for the energy and economic future of our local community.

As the costs of renewable energy continue to plummet below the cost of burning coal, Southwest Colorado stands to reap tremendous benefits. With 300 sunny days a year, we are an ideal place to take advantage of the all-time low costs of solar energy technology.

Jack Turner, running for re-election in District 4, knows that now is the time to invest in our community and reduce our dependence on outdated, imported coal power. A Durango native, Jack quickly learned the value of energy independence when his family’s businesses, a gas station and an oil distribution company, crashed during the 1970s oil embargo.

Since then, he has been a strong advocate for local economic development and keeping our dollars right here in La Plata County.

I’ve also been impressed with Jack’s work on the LPEA board, advocating for low rates and local renewable energy. His leadership has been a key factor in LPEA’s recent progress, including the new goal that aims to reduce our carbon footprint while keeping rates low.

Ballots are mailed April 2. I encourage anyone who cares about local economic development, renewable energy and energy independence to vote to re-elect Jack Turner.
