The Southwest Chapter of the Colorado Native Plant Society will sponsor a field trip to study lichens at 8 a.m. Sunday.
The group will meet at Animas City Park, just north of 32nd Street on East Second Avenue, then carpool to the Lime Creek trailhead north of Coal Bank Pass on U.S. Highway 550.
Instructor Bob Powell will lead this introductory trip to explore lichens of the subalpine and alpine San Juan Mountains. He will discuss different types of lichens, provide a brochure with color photos of common lichens and show participants rock, tree and ground lichens.
The trip will last until early afternoon. Hand magnifying lenses are desirable, and Powell has some to lend for the day.
To attend, email RobertLPowell@durango.net.
The trip is free and open to the public, but participation is limited.

This year’s theme, “Adding Value to Communities,” will focus on tree values, funding needs and costs associated with community forestry programs.
