Archaeologist to highlight social landscapes

Archaeologist Grant Coffey will give a presentation called “Creating Symmetry: Building Social Landscapes in the Central Mesa Verde Region,” at 7 p.m. June 9, at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 County Road K, Cortez.

Coffey says Pueblo people created cultural landscapes with a sense of balance that mirrors the natural world.

Coffey is a lifelong resident of Southwest Colorado with more than 15 years of experience as an archaeologist. Much of his work at Crow Canyon has focused on sites in the Goodman Point Unit of Hovenweep National Monument .

Lecture will explore new Aztec excavations

As part of the Four Corners Lecture Series, the Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society will present Ruth Van Dyke at 7 p.m. June 11 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St., Cortez.

Van Dyke will discuss new excavations at the North Ruin at Aztec, a Chacoan outlier on the Animas River in northwestern New Mexico.
