Maria’s Bookshop and Backcountry Experience are sponsoring “Beneath the Rim: Stories, Poems and Pictures from the Grand Canyon” at 6:30 p.m. July 19. The talk will be given at the Crow’s Closet at 750 Main Ave.
Contributors to two recently published collections of writing about the Grand Canyon will present inspiring stories and photos, as well as practical “how-to” information for those interested in visiting and hiking the Grand Canyon.
Rick Kempa, editor of On Foot: Grand Canyon Backpacking Stories and co-editor of Going Down the Grand: Poems from the Canyon will speak at the event. Danny Rosen of Lithic Press, publisher of Going Down the Grand, will also present.
Going Down the Grand is a collection of poems by 61 writers offering perspectives on the Grand Canyon from the rim, the river and in-between. The book was a finalist for a 2016 Colorado Book Award.
The talk will include time for questions, and a book-signing will follow. For more information, call 247-1438 or email roger@mariasbookshop.com.
Great Old Broads for Wilderness is conducting a July to September Wilderness Stewardship Challenge in the San Juan National Forest involving invasive plant species.
This summer project allows volunteers to spend time in the Weminuche Wilderness, learn more about the impact of invasive species and meet like-minded people.
The La Plata and Pagosa Broadbands have joined forces with the Forest Service to support the health of the areas affected by invasive plant species in Colorado’s largest wilderness area. These plants have the potential to severely disrupt the balance of fragile ecosystems.
The group will survey 10 different trails in search of nine invasive species. Day and overnight trips are offered.
